Which 5G phones have launched or are coming in 2019?

The first 5G networks have now launched in the UK and US. Verizon has already switched on some US cities and EE is now live in six UK cities, too.

Vodafone UK switches on its 5G network on 3 July while Three UK is launching in August. However, there's a bit of a catch with Three's launch as it'll be a home broadband service only to begin with.

To go alongside this rollout, 5G phones have already been announced from Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo and more. We've detailed those below and linked to our other in-depth coverage of those devices.

If you want to know more about 5G itself, including all the details on the network rollouts, check out our main 5G feature - otherwise, let's see who's talked about launching 5G phones so far.

By the way, this feature is just for 2019 phones at the moment - we think the iPhone XII (iPhone 12) in 2020 will be Apple's first 5G phone. In a surprise announcement, Apple has now linked up with Qualcomm to use its 5G modem in the device. On the same day and in a clearly coordinated move, alternative supplier Intel announced it wouldn't produce 5G smartphone modems after all.

Nokia has also now announced that it is going to use Qualcomm 5G chips in a future smartphone - expect that much later in the year or perhaps at next year's Mobile World Congress event in February.

LG V50 ThinQ

The new mainstream flagship 4G phone from LG is the LG G8, but LG also announced the V50 ThinQ which is available on EE in the UK. The G Series phones like the G8 will stay as 4G LTE phones according to LG, while V devices will be 5G from now on.

The V50 ThinQ has a 4000mAh battery and a liquid-cooling chamber to keep everything nice and chilled - dissipating heat up to 40 per cent faster than its predecessor model. It's based on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 platform.

Moto 5G phones

Motorola's Moto Z3 has a 5G Moto Mod and it's available now in the US as a Verizon exclusive - Verizon has now started the roll-out of its 5G network. Verizon expects to have its 5G service turned on in more than 30 areas of the US this year.

OnePlus 7 Pro 5G

The OnePlus 5G phone. It's a 5G version of the OnePlus 7 Pro, rather unsurprisingly called the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. It's available now on EE in the UK.

Again it's running Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855. Interestingly, OnePlus says that even though it looks the same as the standard OnePlus 7 Pro, it had to do a lot of work internally to get the cooling and antenna array right - so it's quite different internally than the standard Pro.

Oppo Reno 5G

Oppo, a sister company of OnePlus, showed off a prototype of its 5G handset on the Qualcomm stand at Mobile World Congress 2019 (above) and we've now seen the phone in the flash at both Swisscom's 5G launch as well as Oppo's own Reno series launch, both in Zurich, Switzerland. It's available on EE in the UK

The 6.6-inch phone is based around Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 platform has an edge-to-edge OLED display with pop-up shark-fin front camera and a triple-rear camera with 10x hybrid zoom.

Samsung S10 5G and Galaxy Fold

We've known for ages that there would be at least two 5G Samsung phones in early 2019.

The Galaxy S10 5G is available now from EE in the UK and Verizon in the US, but will also come to other networks (such as AT&T and Sprint in the US) later. It's also available to pre-order from Vodafone UK.

The foldable Galaxy Fold has also been announced but after the well-documented delay, we don't yet know when it will launch. You can still register for the device

Like Huawei, Samsung uses its own chipset and modem for at least some S Series devices. As before, Qualcomm's 5G hardware is inside US S10 devices while Samsung Exynos hardware is used for the rest of the world. Samsung's 5G modem is called the Exynos Modem 5100.

Sony Xperia 5G phone

Sony used Mobile World Congress to launch three phones, but none of those were 5G. Instead, a prototype of Sony's 5G device - which has a long 21:9 aspect ratio - was shown on Qualcomm's stand. Details are limited, but we know it uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and X50 5G modem. That's as much as we have right now - we'd expect it to launch later in the year (probably at IFA 2019) although we've heard some whispers from a network that it could even be one for 2020.

Vivo 5G phone

Vivo is also confirmed to be developing a 5G device, with a prototype shown late in 2018 on Qualcomm's stand at CES 2019. As yet there's no word when it will launch.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is 5G-ready and was officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress. It uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 platform and sports a 6.39-inch 2,340 x 1,080 FHD+ AMOLED display.

It has launched in the UK with Vodafone even though Vodafone's 5G network isn't available for another month. It's Vodafone's first-available 5G handset from £54 per month. It comes in Onyx Black.

ZTE Axon 10 Pro 5G

We normally don't cover ZTE a great deal because of the availability of its devices in Europe, but ZTE has announced that the Axon 10 Pro 5G handset will be coming to Europe as well as China in the first half of this year, perhaps bolstered by the success of other Chinese handset manufacturers.

Again the phone runs Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and it's rumoured to have a 6.47-inch 2,340 x 1,080 display.

Huawei Mate X and Mate 20 X 5G

In the UK, O2, Three, Vodafone and EE all previously confirmed the Mate 20 X 5G but now this has been thrown into doubt because of Huawei's Google ban.  Essentially, Vodafone and EE have said they've hit pause on Huawei 5G handsets.

The phone hasn't been mentioned in marketing information or presentation slides. "We've put the Huawei devices on pause until we've got a bit more information on that" said EE boss Marc Allera at the company's 5G launch.

If the Huawei-Google situation is resolved, we'd still expect it to be sold by the network. We'll update this with more news when we get it.

The Mate 20 X 5G - also confirmed by Huawei itself - is a 5G version of the huge 7.2-inch Mate 20 X we looked at earlier this year - also pictured above.

Huawei has also announced its Mate X foldable phone that will be released later in the year. It supports 5G and before the ban was announced as coming to Vodafone and EE in the UK.

It won't be cheap although there's no UK price as yet. The global announcement set it at €2,299 with 8GB RAM and 512GB storage. Again this is all slightly up-in-the-air because of the Google/Huawei situation

Huawei is also going to be providing a 5G home router - we've seen this in action at one of Vodafone's 5G trials. Vodafone, Three and EE will be stocking this, called the 5G CPE Pro router. We believe Vodafone may market it as GigaCube.

Huawei uses its own hardware platform inside its flagship devices and its 5G modem is called Balong 5000, boasting a 6.5Gbps max speed. It works alongside the Kirin 980 platform that made its debut inside the Mate 20 Pro and has now been used in the P30 series.

Aside from these devices, we're expecting the late-2019 Mate 30 to be Huawei's first mass-market 5G phone
