Samsung Galaxy A90 5G initial review: A glorious 5G handset for the masses
Samsung's [line-up of phones][2] can be a little confusing. There's [the Galaxy S][3] flagship phones, then the [Galaxy Note][4] devices, but more and more, we're seeing aggressive manoeuvring from the Galaxy A family.
The Galaxy A brought [a quad camera][5] in 2018, and a rotating camera in 2019 in [the A80][6], while the latest device - the Galaxy A90 - offers a much more affordable [5G handset][7] for the masses.
We've spent some time with the Galaxy A90 5G and what a lovely device it is. Here are our first impressions.
## Design
* 164.8 x 76.4 x 8.4mm, 206g
* Geometric pattern
* Black and white colour options
The Samsung Galaxy A90 5G is a gorgeous smartphone. Like Samsung's flagship devices, the Galaxy A90 5G has a solid metal frame with lovely rounded edges and a premium build quality.
![][8]
There's a huge Infinity U display on the front of the device with just a small waterdrop notch and no bezels, while the glass rear has a unique geometric pattern, delivering a really interesting finish in both the black and white colour options. The geometric detailing is more obvious on the white model but both are fun and offer something a little different.
A simple triple rear camera system is positioned in the top left of the rear - similar to [the A70][9] - making sure not to disrupt the pattern, meaning light reflects off the rear nicely.

Meanwhile, there's USB Type-C at the bottom of the device, with a speaker to the right, while the top features the microSD and SIM tray. On the right side of the Galaxy A90, the volume rocker and power button are situated, while the left side has nothing to interrupt the smooth, rounded edge.
Despite the large display, the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G is comfortable to hold and use. It's weighty at 206g, but it feels reassuringly solid and every bit flagship, even with it's sub-flagship badge. There is no [IP rating][11] for the A90 5G though so while it looks as premium as [the S10][12] and [Note 10][13], there are a couple of features missing here and there.
## Display
* 6.7-inch, Super AMOLED
* Infinity U display
* Full HD+ (2400 x 1080)
The Samsung Galaxy A90 5G's display is glorious, at least it certainly looked it based on what we could see from our short briefing with the device. We will of course test the display properly when we get the A90 in for full review but based on our first impressions, the colours on the 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen really popped.
![][14]
We saw [the Galaxy Fold][15] at the same time as we saw the Galaxy A90 5G but at no point did we feel like the A90 5G was lacking in the screen department compared to the Fold.
The Full HD+ resolution might not be as sharp as the likes of the Note 10 or Galaxy S10 but Galaxy A90 5G's display still impressed us. As many would expect from Samsung's Super AMOLED displays, the colours were lovely and vibrant, while the blacks were nice and deep. We will dive into more detail on the screen when we review the A90 in full though.
## Cameras
* Triple rear camera
* 32MP front camera
* Super Steady, Scene Optimiser, Flaw Detector
On the back of the Samsung Galaxy A90, there is a triple lens camera system, as we briefly mentioned. This camera system is made up of a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 5-megapixel depth sensor and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor with an aperture of f/2.2 and a field of view of 123-degrees.
![][16]
On the front, there's a 32-megapixel sensor with an aperture of f/2.0 so Samsung has really played the megapixel numbers game in the A90 5G. Do more megapixels mean a better camera? No, not necessarily, and we will have to wait to get this device in for review to test the Galaxy A90 5G's cameras, but Samsung has a good track record when it comes to smartphone camera results.
We're keeping our fingers crossed its processing abilities from the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Note 10 make their way onto the A90 too, which is likely given a few of the features have. The A90 5G has the company's AI capabilities including Super Steady, Scene Optimiser and Flaw Detector, all of which are on the flagship devices.

The front camera also offers Live Focus Mode, designed to make it easier to capture the best selfies or group videos.
## Hardware and software
* Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 5G
* 6GB/8GB RAM
* 128GB storage, microSD
* 4500mAh battery 25W Super Fast Charging
The Samsung Galaxy A90 5G has plenty going for it based on what we've seen of the device, but its hardware is where it really shines. Offering the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 5G chipset under its hood, the A90 5G is not messing about.
![][18]
Instead it's delivering the power of flagship handsets, coupled with [5G capabilities][19]. Most 5G smartphones available currently - including [Samsung's own S10 5G][20] and Note 10+ 5G - are over the £1000 mark. There are a few other options, such as [the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G][21] and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G, but Samsung is most definitely aiming to appeal to the masses with the A90.
The powerful chipset is supported by either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, along with 128GB of internal storage and there is microSD support for up to 512GB - though this is only on the 6GB of RAM model.
![][22]
The Galaxy A90 5G also has a huge 4500mAh cell running the show, with 25W Super Fast Charging. It doesn't support [Samsung's PowerShare][23] reverse wireless charging and the fast charging isn't as snappy as the Note 10's 45W of course, but you can't have it all hey.
In terms of software, the Galaxy A90 5G runs on Android with Samsung's One UI over the top, delivering a very familiar software experience to the flagship S10 and Note 10 devices. Not everything will be identical, and as we've mentioned, some features will be missing but the overall interface will be the same.

We couldn't test the performance of the Galaxy A90 5G during our time with it, but we will certainly be putting it through its paces when we get it in for review.
